During a lovely Mother's Day weekend, my mom and I ventured to the Mississippi River Distilling Company, located near the quad cities in Le Claire, Iowa. The small distillery is only about two years old and is situated directly on the Mississippi River, as the name suggests. It's entirely run by a staff of four, including the two brothers who quit their jobs in 2010 and decided to go into the business of making spirits. We had the chance to tour the facility, as well as sample some of their fine spirits.
This was only my second time touring a distillery (the first was at Koval in Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood--I highly recommend it!) but I was impressed with the amount of local sourcing the folks at MRDC use. All grains, corn, wheat, rye and barley, are harvested from farms within a 25 mile radius of the distillery. Additionally, the local community comes together to help fill, cap and label each individual bottle of spirits. The distillery stays open late on the first Friday of each month to offer events including new spirit releases (this month was honey whiskey!) and partnerships with local restaurants in Le Claire. The front of the distillery and tasting room even feature art installations from local artists which rotate every two months.
Mississippi River Distilling Company is a great place to stop by for a quick tour, samples of their spirits including gin, vodka and bourbon and the ability to take in gorgeous views of the Mississippi River!
