Not Just Another Sushi Joint
July 18, 2010
Sushi joints are a dime a dozen in Chicago so when the craving for sushi hit, the BF and I decided to try one that had good reviews on Yelp! Ponzu Sushi is one of three sushi places within a block of each other on Clark Street in Lincoln Park. What set them apart from other places, was their friendly service and unique sushi creations. The staff at Ponzu even chilled the beer we brought and offered us a frozen beer mug with each bottle. Now that's great BYOB service (especially with no cork fee!)
We started our meal off with a Japanese staple, pork gyoza dumplings. These were pretty standard, but lacked the usual mix of veggies found inside.
Next, we each tried several different rolls. I tried the spicy salmon cruch makimono and the spider roll.
My BF tried the salmon avocado roll and the tuna avocado roll. He was feeling pretty adventurous so he tried Ponzu's signature "Tsumiki block sushi." These little blocks were made up of seared tuna & sweet soy dressing on a filling of tempura crunch, avocado & spicy mayo. We especially liked the sprinkling of gold flakes on top of each piece.
We had a great dining experience at Ponzu Sushi. The staff was extremely accomidating and polite and the food came out fast and fresh. Try Ponzu for a great meal out with friends, or a Saturday night date. But arrive early, tables in this small restaurant fill up quickly! 4 Stars.
