A Taste of Colombia...No Vegetarians Allowed
May 31, 2010
My roomie and I decided to try a popular Colombian steak house, one which he had been itching to try, and conveniently offered a Groupon discount. We headed to Las Tablas Colombian Steak House on Lincoln Ave. in Lakeview on a Friday night. We went early enough that we were seated right away, but the place gets very crowded and only takes reservations for 6+ people on the weekend, so arrive early! The restaurant itself is beautiful and filled with handmade chairs of Colombian wood and walls filled with Botero's famous 'rotund' paintings.
My roomie and I started with one of Las Tablas' specialities, their homemade empanadas. We tried the combination plate which came with two each of chicken, cheese & beef. These crispy corn pockets were filled with minced meat and a variety of veggies including potato and peas. We also ordered their sangria which was perfectly refreshing on a warm night. The sangria was not too sweet and very tasty and we were told to come back on Wednesdays for half price ($12) sangria pitchers.
For the main course, we both chose one of their popular combinations of the skirt steak (house specialty) and grilled shrimp or calamari. Both plates came with potato, yuca and a fried plantain. To compliment the different flavors of our entree, we were given two homemade sauces made of ingredients including chopped cilantro, olive oil, and peppers. We found ourselves putting these savory sauces on everything! It was easy to tell why the skirt steak was the house specialty-it was one of the most tender and well-seasoned pieces of steak I've ever had. The sides were great compliments and the plaintain acted as a nice palate cleanser.
Overall, our experience at Las Tablas was wonderful. We were able to get a table with no wait, the service was great and the food outstanding. If you're far from being a vegetarian, this place is right up your alley. 5 big stars!
